This workshop will be led by member Scott Petersen (possibly assisted by others)
Do you like programming/coding? Have you ever wanted to make music... with a computer? Have you heard about electronic music / computer music but you don't really know what they are, the differences between them and within the genres, or where to start when it comes to experimenting with them? This workshop aims to provide a solid introduction to computer music and its associated theories and concepts with practical discussion and examples. (This is exciting stuff!.. think 4,000 rabid monkeys in a banana factory)
What will be discussed
- Discuss electronic music, computer music, and algorithmic music as genres and ideas
- Introduce several computer music interfaces and discuss features
- Introduce SuperCollider, a music programming language
- Demonstrate features of SuperCollider including algorithmic examples, "traditional" score examples, and live coding
What to bring with you
Laptop, code fever
What you will walk away with
- A good general knowledge of what constitutes modern computer music, practices, etc.
- Basics of electro-acoustic and computer music theory (Who doesn't need that?)
- Knowledge of (and more importantly perhaps) examples of SuperCollider code
- If you bring a laptop, you can walk away with an installation of SuperCollider, tutorials, examples, all on your computer.
- Resources: pdf introductions to computer music in several languages, SuperCollider specific code tutorials, resources for further learning
