MakeHaven Main Space
The main makerspace and connected shops. This is located at 770 Chapel Street. Registered participants should ring the MakeHaven labeled doorbell. They will be directed down a long hallway, and down a set of stairs to our basement workshop.
Curious how wood was dimensioned, shaped and thicknessed before jointers, planers, table saws and routers existed? Want to get into the wood shop but turned off by all the noisy equipment?
Handplanes are the answer to most questions about working wood by hand, but they can be a bit mysterious starting out.
In an afternoon, you’ll learn how to set up and dial in a standard bench plane, read grain direction, and make shavings to get the flat, square and parallel faces and edges a board needs to serve in a woodworking project. By the end, you will have a board with four square sides ready to use in a project (or serve charcuterie!), the skill to make another one starting with rough sawn or warped material, and ideas about how to fit planes into your woodworking practice.
