Infrastructure Improvements (Plumbing/Electrical/HVAC/etc)

Submitted by [current-user:… on

First a note from our sponsor: If anyone knows a contractor of any sort who might be the type to work with us to keep costs down, please ask them if they'd be willing to come take a look at what we have to give us a quote.

Hi folks,

I'm putting this up as a placehold and rallying point for everyone involved in the infrastructure work at MakeHaven. As you may remember, we are currently focussed on improving the space in four key areas:

Committee - Basement Lab

Submitted by [current-user:… on

The space has been identified as a perfect place to do a little micro-brewing and as well, a darkroom setup.  There are some medium to major tasks that will be required to ready the space for such activities.

1: General clean up (FREE!!!)- This entails wiping down all surfaces and refrigerator with disinfectant (Mike M. has a big bottle of commercial strength cleaner) to both kill mold and prep for painting in order to cover the mold and in general, to lighten up the place.

Trade Up to A Large Shop Tool

Submitted by J.R. Logan on

You may have heard the story about how a man bartered his way from a red paperclip to a house (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_red_paperclip). We are wondering if we can find our way from a compass to a ShopBot CNC. The trading has already started.

Trade #1

Workbenches for the basement

Submitted by [current-user:… on

On Sunday, the 27th, @ 10am we will be constructing some benches for the donated tools we have accumulated as well as for work surfaces.  Tomorrow night (Tuesday) I will be measuring and plotting the basement space to try to come up with a reasonable layout.  Any input is welcome in this regard.

On Sunday we will start by picking up the materials at HD and will work until it ain't fun no more.

RotoMold Machine

Submitted by Ben Berkowitz on

Hey Guys,

I am deadset on building a rotomold machine at makehaven.

Rotomolds can be used for molding rubber duckies and other vinyl toys.[[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"233","attributes":{"alt":"","class":"media-image","height":"431","width":"480"}}]]

See attached specs: http://www.solsylva.com/cnc/rotomolder.shtml

Seems very simple and looks like we can make some of the gears on the 3D Printer.

DYI Solar Cell From Toothpaste, Tea and Donuts.

Submitted by J.R. Logan on

Solar cells have always seemed a little magical to me. I don't really understand how they are made except for that is is a big industrial process. I have asked people who seem to know and been told there is no way to build one yourself(the cell not just the housing). However I just happened to find this video that shows you how to build one using using donut powder (little scary to think huh?) and tea:

MakeHaven Sign

Submitted by [current-user:… on

I think we should make one or two signs out of acrylic for MakeHaven. For inside the space, I envision something like this on our brick wall:

It's laser cut acrylic on brushed aluminum standoffs. With access to a lasercutter, we could cut the acrylic pretty easily. Then it would be a fairly trivial assembly project. The only real difficulty is that much acrylic could be rather pricety.

For outside (if it's legal to DIY), I was thinking something in this vein mounted above the door:

Mixed Reality and 3d Object with Blender (Compositing)

Submitted by J.R. Logan on

There are several video out there that show a 3d animation rendered into real life. Here is an example:

Lots of people call this Compositing. I think it would be fun to do in with some video tha is clearly in New Haven and digitally add some object that is out of place. I am not sure what object would best. Mabye something from history.

Build 3d Printer

Submitted by Make Haven on

We want to build a 3d printer so we can make digital objects real.

Status: We have ordered parts and are waiting for them to come in.
