Give the gift of an experience with wood carved print making

Woodcut is a type of printmaking process. The art of printmaking involves the creation of a "master" printing block, from which multiple prints can then be made. The creation of a woodcut block is a very satisfying and tactile process, where hand tools are used to carve out the image that will be printed.

In this introductory workshop, students will learn how to:

  • Use the carving tools.
  • How to prepare an image for carving.
  • Some basic carving techniques.
  • How to print your block by hand.
  • How to print multiple colors (registration).
  • Printing cards or stationary

During this 3-hour class, you will develop a one or two color design on tracing paper, and transfer the designs to two woodblocks. Printing is done by hand, using water-based ink, white cards and a Japanese tool called a baren. Registration (which is lining up the separate colors) will be demonstrated.

The gift certificate for the class is $40 and for any of the wood carved print making classes held by Michael Angelis in 2018.  Workshops are conducted monthly in the evenings.

An additional option is the Wood Carving Tools Starter Kit. This kit has all the tools needed to continue the carving work at home and is provided at bellow retail value through a partnership with Artist and Craftsman. The kit is an additional $50 and can be picked up during the class or by prior arrangement with jrlogan@makehaven.org if purchased before December 17th.
