The main makerspace and connected shops. This is located at 770 Chapel Street. Registered participants should ring the MakeHaven labeled doorbell. They will be directed down a long hallway, and down a set of stairs to our basement workshop.
Introduction to Woodcut
Woodcut is a type of printmaking process. The art of printmaking involves the creation of a "master" printing block, from which multiple prints can then be made. The creation of a woodcut block is a very satisfying and tactile process, where hand tools are used to carve out the image that will be printed.
In this introductory workshop, students will learn how to:
- Use the carving tools.
- How to prepare an image for carving.
- How to work with the grain and character of the block.
- Some basic carving techniques.
- How to print your block by hand.
During this 3-hour class, you will practice techniques on a scrap block, and then carve your images onto a 8" x 8" poplar block to carve final images into. Blocks are two sided which will allow for you to carve two separate images or two sides of the same image. Printing is done by hand, using black oil-based ink, and white paper and a Japanese tool called a baren.
You will take home multiple prints, your block, and a resource guide with instructions and a shopping list so that you can continue to practice on your own.
Themes, images, and ideas are open-ended and entirely up to you.
