MakeHaven Main Space
The main makerspace and connected shops. This is located at 770 Chapel Street. Registered participants should ring the MakeHaven labeled doorbell. They will be directed down a long hallway, and down a set of stairs to our basement workshop.
This course will teach participants how to read grain patterns in green (newly cut) wood and split out billets (spoon blanks) for carving. With a small hatchet, slyod knife and hook knife, participants will learn how to rough out spoon shapes with an eye on form and function. The slyod and hook knifes will be used to refine the spoon shape and bowl with special attention to safe an efficient knife use.
Finally, using a few relatively simple tools such as card scrapers, wood rasps, spoke shaves and sand paper, participants will add their own personal touch to their functional yet epic one of a kind green wood spoon!
No experience necessary. All materials and tools provided. Participants will finish the class with their own custom wooden spoon and a starter kit of carving tools to continue the hobby!
Please note: This class will happen over two consecutive Fridays: October 7 & October 14, 2022.
