It is used to compress the metal, giving the user the ability to flatten sheet metal, change it’s gauge, forge it, etc. It is an incredibly useful tool for metal sculpture and jewelry making.

Also: we don't *need* a forge for an anvil to be an incredibly useful, meaningful addition to our metalworking capabilities. It has enormous use in many other metalworking capacities.
