Building a Social Network

Submitted by Sean O'Brien on

I run a privacy-respecting social network called Foojbook at https://foojbook.net

I'm looking for folks to:

a) Join the network! It's private and accounts must be approved by an admin, but I'll be happy to approve you.  Register at https://foojbook.net/register

b) Test, tweak, and hack the software, themes, and graphics.  It runs on the Friendica platform, and is able to talk to other Friendica instances as well as StatusNet and Diaspora.

c) Develop a slim Debian-based distro with LAMP + Friendica and sane defaults, perhaps targeted at plug/mini computers like DreamPlug and Raspberry Pi.  I've done this before so I'd be happy to provide training and pointers, but I haven't targeted ARM or limited hardware resources.

d) If there's enough interest (or more interest than in Foojbook), work on a MakeHaven theme and instance of Friendica, and run it on a server in the space.  I've got spare hardware I could provide for this as well, and it could be a good promotional tool for MakeHaven.  Interacting with other Friendica servers would announce MakeHaven to a large community of hackers, makers, and DIY folks.  Running a Friendica instance would also help build the decentralized, free social Web.

With the PRISM revelations looming large, there's no better time to think about digital privacy.  For my rationale for the project, see http://foojbook.org/about

For more about Foojbook's features, see https://getlibre.org/wiki/index.php?title=Foojbook

For more about Friendica in general, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendica

Let me know what you all think; communicating in a whole new way can be fun :)
