Position: Lead Instructor, Foundations of Fabrication  

Location: MakeHaven, New Haven, CT  

Duration: 4.5 months per cohort  

Weekly Hours: Minimum 9 hours, Maximum 12 hours  - Sessions happen weeknights, usually 7p - 9p and 1 weekend shop hour block, time TBD

Compensation: Starting at $25 per hour, based on experience and expertise

 

About the Program:

The Foundations of Fabrication (FoF) program at MakeHaven is a comprehensive course designed to equip participants with foundational skills across 15 different fabrication disciplines, including woodworking, metalworking, textiles, digital fabrication, and more. This program is structured to provide both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, making it ideal for individuals looking to explore or advance in various fabrication fields.

 

Role Overview:

MakeHaven is seeking a dynamic and experienced Lead Instructor to oversee the instructional process, support participants throughout their learning journey, and ensure the smooth operation of the Foundations of Fabrication program. The Lead Instructor will work closely with other discipline-specific instructors and facilitators to deliver a cohesive and engaging learning experience.

 

Key Responsibilities:

- Instruction: Lead two 3-hour classes each week, with a focus on overseeing hands-on learning and ensuring participants can effectively apply the theoretical concepts they have learned.

- Collaboration: Coordinate with other instructors who specialize in each discipline to lead the lecture portions of the classes, while you manage the hands-on project work. Collaborate with facilitators or separate paid staff to conduct group badging events that align with the program’s objectives.

- Floating Hours: Dedicate 3 additional hours each week for shop hours, participant support, documentation, and preparation. Be available to assist participants with their projects, answer questions, and provide guidance as needed.

- Curriculum Development: Work with the Education Director, discipline instructors, and facilitators to refine and update the curriculum, ensuring it remains relevant and effective. Develop new teaching materials as required.

- Participant Support: Offer individualized mentorship, helping participants overcome challenges and achieve their learning goals. Evaluate progress through project assessments and badge achievements, providing constructive feedback.

- Coordination and Logistics: Manage class scheduling, material preparation, and logistical aspects to ensure smooth program delivery. Coordinate with guest speakers or additional instructors as needed.

- Safety and Compliance: Ensure all activities adhere to MakeHaven’s safety protocols, guiding participants on the safe use of tools and equipment.

 

Qualifications:

- Extensive experience in fabrication, with proficiency across multiple disciplines.

- Strong teaching or instructional experience, preferably with hands-on learning.

- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

- Ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles.

- Passion for making and the ability to inspire and motivate learners.

 

Commitment:

- Availability for the full duration of the cohort.

- Preparedness for each class, including curriculum review and coordination with other instructors.

- Regular communication with the Education Director, other instructors, and participants.
