Online Event Protocol
For online events. Please mute when entering so to avoid disrupting the presentation. Arrival more than 15 minutes late will result in not being able to participate. If you are new to online presentations join the presentation 5 minutes before start to ensure you are properly setup.

Event Recording and Publication
Participants acknowledge video workshops may be recorded and shared on our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/MakehavenOrg), or elsewhere. For online events you may disable your video stream to avoid having your image recorded. The name/alias used will be recorded and shared. The information is current as of the date of the presentation, which means at some point it may (and likely will be) outdated.

The U.S. Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Homeland Security are collaborating to create a Civic Innovation Challenge. Stage 1 entry must be submitted by July 1, 2020. Winners will have budgets of up to $50,000 to test out their proposal. 

This New Haven online ideation session is focused on the track -- Resilience to Natural Disasters: Equipping Communities for Greater Preparedness and Resilience to Natural Disasters.

 

This event is in partnership with New Haven City Planning Department.

 

Ideation Session Agenda (this session is entirely an online session)

4:05 - 4:15 - Primer on Contest

4:15 - 4:30 - Individual Ideation Brainstorm Submission

4:25 - 4:40 - Speaker on Civic Disaster Response

4:40 - 4:50 - Presentation of Brainstorm Submissions (organized in groupings)

4:50 - 5:15  - Online Breakout Rooms by Groupings  / Group Conversation / Identify Key Ideas (and Idea leads for each)

5:15 - 5:40 - Teams Breakout, Select Scribe and Complete Ideation Worksheet.

5:40 - 5:55 - Groups share back findings to larger group

5:50 - 6:00 - Closing remarks and instructions on submission logistics

Goals/Criteria for winning submissions:

  • Community identified civic priorities that are ripe for innovation and community informed and Use-inspired solutions
  • Partnership with researchers and civic partners: https://nsfcivicinnovation.org/eligibility/
  • Focuses on piloting in a short timescale, where real-world impact can be evaluated within 12 months
  • Scalability and transferability of the proposed solutions

 

Process

In the second stage (Stage 2), up to four teams per track will be selected from Stage 1 award recipients to receive a full award — each with a budget of up to $1,000,000 for up to 12 months to execute and evaluate their research-centered pilot projects.
