Program Overview

GEMS is a 10-week program that introduces new and seasoned makers to foundational skills in woodworking, textiles, digital fabrication, and metalworking. Participants will work on hands-on projects while earning badges that certify tool proficiency, helping them gain confidence and independence in the makerspace. By the end of the program, participants will have completed four projects and joined a supportive community of makers.

  • Who can join the GEMS program? GEMS is designed for new members looking to dive into the maker community, but established members are also welcome to join and explore.
  • 🔧 Do I need prior experience with tools or fabrication? No prior experience is needed! GEMS is an introductory program perfect for beginners who want to get hands-on and start learning.
  • 📅 What happens if I miss a session? We’ll do our best to help you catch up, but it’s always better to let us know in advance if you can’t make it. Please note that instructors and coaches may have limited availability outside of scheduled hours.
  • 🛠️ Are materials provided, or do I need to bring my own? Your coach will provide recommendations for low-cost materials, and MakeHaven often has scraps available for small projects.
  • 📋 Can I join if I’m not a MakeHaven member? A MakeHaven membership is required to participate in GEMS, as the program is centered around using the space and earning badges.
  • 🏅 What are badges? Badges are micro-credentials that demonstrate your skills and are recognized within MakeHaven. They allow you to access tools and equipment independently once earned.
